Recent developments of electrospun zein nanofibres: Strategies, fabrication and therapeutic applications

Zein is the major protein in corn and main byproduct of starch industry and, therefore, crucial for global agricultural commodities. Its unique fibre-forming properties, which underline its potential as a biodegradable material, have drawn intensified interest from public, scientists, industries because growing concern about environmental risks. As zein electrospun nanofibre has been studied different research fields, recent advances nanofibres therapeutic field need re-examination. This review provides an overview various methods modifications (e.g., crosslinking, deamidation glycosylation on properties setups emulsion multi-layer electrospinning) last decade reports current applications such controlled release, wound healing, tissue engineering biosensor. It also discussed mechanisms electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic van der Waals forces. The biocompatibility, encapsulation make it replacement traditional synthetic materials. Since specific zein-based materials are acquirable via processing, developing insight into relationship between functions microstructure conformations modified along with processes could contribute to high-quality fibrous products. limitations challenges nanofibres.
